My projects are quickly planned, struggled with, abandoned, reclaimed, struggled with some more, and finished with the mantra of “Not perfect, but good enough.” I am never left feeling successful. Instead, I have felt the exhale of, “Well at least it's done-ish.” I was thinking about that seemingly unachievable feeling of success when I happened upon a video of a Hot Ones interview with a basketball coach, and something he said resonated with me. When asked about what fans might not understand about a team rebuild, Coach Underwood gave this answer. “We live in a microwave society. Everybody wants to win right now, and there is no shortcut to success and to winning. The one thing we've tried to do here was lay an unbelievable foundation... but along the way there's going to be some speed-bumps. You have to not be afraid to handle them and try to never divert from where you want to go. There's no substitute for success and I believe that it's laying a great foundation and working really hard.”
What did I take away from that? Laying a great foundation and working really hard is success. What if handling those speed-bumps and building a foundation is part of the success? That would mean that I've had it all wrong. Success isn't an explosion of party confetti and applause that happens at the end of a project. It's small victories that add up until we reach the finished project.
